NEWS RELEASE: Former Hotmail Executive and AT&T Paradyne CIO Steve Douty Appointed President of BSG Alliance Corp. Applications Division
by Steve G on Sep 13, 2007 - 05:53 AM read 1133 timesAustin, TX – September 13, 2007 - BSG Alliance Corp., the platform for Next Generation Enterprises, On Demand, today announced Steve Douty, a 25-year software and services industry innovator, has been appointed President of the company’s software applications and infrastructure division, BSG Applications. The company also announced the acquisition and integration of Kalivo, Inc., maker of a Web 2.0, Software as a Service (or SaaS) collaboration product, to form a core component of the on-demand offering from BSG Applications.
“We are thrilled that Steve Douty has joined BSG Alliance to lead the company’s on demand applications division,” said Steven G. Papermaster, chairman and CEO of BSG Alliance Corp. “Steve has the vision and experience to build the platform enabling BSG Alliance’s customers to solve business problems in new and innovative ways.”
Mr. Douty broke into the Internet marketplace in 1996, when he joined Hotmail as vice president of marketing, sales and business development. After Microsoft acquired Hotmail at the end of 1997, he became the director of business planning and media programming for MSN. At MSN, Mr. Douty was a key player in the conversion of MSN.com to a portal, the acquisition of LinkExchange, and the creation of Passport. The first 15 years of his career were in telecom, IT and systems integration where he served at companies like GTE, IBM, AT&T, and original BSG Corporation. He served as CIO for AT&T Paradyne in the early 90s. Mr. Douty has a B.A. in Computer Science from Dartmouth College.
BSG Alliance On-Demand Applications: Web 2.0 for the Enterprise
In addition to the appointment of Mr. Douty, BSG Alliance today also announced the acquisition of Kalivo, Inc., maker of a Web 2.0, SaaS-based collaboration suite. The Kalivo software has been integrated into BSG Alliance on-demand applications platform as its core Collaboration Hub.
The BSG Alliance Collaboration Hub is an on demand application that enables online “conversations” among a company’s employees or between employees, customers and anyone on the Internet. In addition, it monitors conversations that customers, prospects and competitors are saying – all over the Web – about a company and its products. The Hub excels at engaging those people most likely to design, develop, use, deploy, recommend or critique any product and service.
Collaboration has emerged as a core competency for enterprises desiring greater customer, employee, and partner engagement afforded by Web 2.0 technologies, as reported by a new research study – “eBusiness: What’s Happened and What Happens Next?” – recently completed by BSG Alliance’s Concours Institute, the company’s research and executive education arm. In the report, analysts conclude that “next-stage eBusiness is all about collaboration.” It discusses how eBusiness must be always on, demand-ready and connected – using collaborative methods like “crowdsourcing,” mashups, blogs, wikis and other online tools.Research for the report was conducted with 17 large organizations across multiple industries, including financial services, utilities, technology, transportation and health care. In addition, four detailed case studies describe how companies have applied new techniques to gain greater connectedness with their customers and target audience. The report concludes with eight recommendations for action to help companies take key measures towards becoming next-stage eBusinesses.
“A next generation enterprise has collaboration at its core,” said Mr. Douty. “Out of this collaboration, new social networks, communities, markets, and business models are surfacing – and changing the face of commerce. We plan to put BSG Alliance at the forefront of this revolution.”

NEWS RELEASE: BSG Alliances Concours Institute Announces Challenging Results of Generation Y Workforce Study
by Steve G on Sep 06, 2007 - 10:00 AM read 3351 timesAustin, TX – September 6, 2007 – BSG Alliance’s Concours Institute today announced the results of a comprehensive study of “Generation Y” – adults born between 1980 and 2000 and numbering some 70 million strong in the United States – and announced the launch of a significant follow-on research project: Solving the Workforce Crisis – Innovative Strategies for Recruiting and Retaining Talented Women. Both studies are part of the Concours Institute’s on-going research into developing future best practices for leading global employers, on the heels of its Harvard Business Press book, Workforce Crisis, published last year.
In its new research report, Engaging Today’s Young Employees, the Concours Institute found that Generation Ys – also known as the Millennials or Gen Ys – are not slipping into the workplace quietly, but challenging companies’ traditional approaches to recruitment and hiring, training and development, engagement, and retention.
“Our study found that Gen Y employees are going to be a tough sell for many companies,” said Tammy Erickson, president of BSG Alliance’s Concours Institute. “Gen Ys come to the workplace with high expectations for learning, rapid advancement, a balance between work and their active personal lives, good pay, and lots of attention and responsibility. To capitalize on this rich pool of workers, it’s imperative that HR leaders begin evolving a talent-force strategy for their Next Generation Enterprises.”

As Baby Boomers and older employees move inevitably toward retirement or reduced work responsibilities, Gen Ys are going to be their replacements. Companies, however, are not entirely prepared for what this new generation expects from work and expects to give to their employers.
For example, focus groups with more than 85 Gen Ys in companies across a spectrum of industries revealed their key expectations:- Less bureaucracy.
- More flexibility.
- More personalization.
- Better on-boarding and induction processes and programs.
- Improved development and career plans.
- More and better communications.
To succeed in attracting, hiring, developing, engaging, and retaining the right Gen Ys, the ones that will thrive and advance, companies need to:
· Be clear about their values and culture and sell both: Ys want to know you are proud of your company, what it does, its values, and its reputation. Selling these values on a sophisticated, rich, and deep web site is key to attracting Ys.
· Be flexible. This really applies to your overall approach to Ys. They are comfortable with complexity, with solving problems, and with themselves. This flexibility extends to technology: Ys’ come to the workplace with their own well established communications and technology behaviors; companies will have to adapt, in many cases, to these behaviors and preferences.
· Provide plenty of development and networking opportunities in a variety of formats. A blend of mentoring, coaching, online self-paced learning, and classroom work is the most effective approach. Ys want interaction with one another; group- and team-based projects, as well as organized social events, create networking opportunities that are highly valued.
· Make sure managers and supervisors give them responsibility from day one, and follow it up with continuous feedback and encouragement. This does not mean that they cannot be criticized; they accept constructive criticism. But most important is to have frequent, informal communications with them on their performance and give them the chance to offer their ideas and suggestions.
· Be patient. Compared to previous generations of workers, many companies will see Ys as high-maintenance. Following through on the little things – from accurately describing their jobs and roles before hire to providing feedback and growth opportunities after the hire – can go a long way to keeping them highly engaged and satisfied, lowering their anxiety and yours.
The report, which is available in its entirety, along with a private briefing from Concours Institute’s executive research staff, for $5,000, includes detailed summaries of the focus group participants’ perspectives on the work experience they have and the one they prefer and expected. It also provides the detailed data and research methodologies for this project including:
· In-depth interviews with senior HR leaders at companies in industries that included fast food, airlines, transportation, home improvement, public utilities, communications, consumer products, and financial services.
· One and a half hour in-person focus groups with employees in those companies and others.
· Data gathered from three years of research in demographic trends and issues, collected in The Handbook of the New American Workforce, including an exclusive online survey of more than 7,700 managers, professionals, and individuals conducted by Harris Interactive.
· Secondary research including hundreds of reports, articles, surveys, and research projects spanning the last 8-10 years.
All primary research for Engaging Today’s Young Employees was conducted from January through May 2007.
From Gen Y to Gender F
While Gen Y, on the whole, may represent a large growing portion of the workforce, women receive almost 60% of all college degrees granted in the United States today. Yet, recent data shows that many young women are choosing not to enter the workforce at all while others are dropping out after only a few years, posing a significant problem in the near future as talent becomes more scarce.
"Attracting and retaining women is the critically important issue for any company that hopes to have a college-educated workforce in the future,” said Ed Mello, President, BSG Concours. “BSG Concours and the Concours Institute have spent many years researching the growing workforce shortage, so it made sense to continue looking hard at the untapped talent pools like educated women and to develop creative solutions on behalf of ours clients and other stakeholders.”
The project, which focuses on developing creative new approaches to help companies more effectively recruit, develop, and engage women, brings together an unparalleled group of subject matter experts - Dr. Rob Cross, The University of Virginia, Dr. Lynda Gratton, London Business School, and Dr. Herminia Ibarra, INSEAD – demonstrating the power of the BSG Alliance model in attracting the world’s foremost thinkers into real-world projects aimed at solving the pressing issues of our generation.
The sponsorship fee for participating in the Recruiting and Retaining Women study is $15,000. For the fee, sponsors are entitled to:
· participate in shaping the critical questions and assumptions of the study;
· participate and review preliminary findings during interim conference calls throughout the research process; and,
· receive an in-depth briefing of the final results of the research, along with acknowledgment as a sponsor of the study.
The research is scheduled to begin with a charter member kick-off in December and conclude in the second Quarter of 2008.
