re: Twitter's unintended consequences

This is a great point! So, as I was giving a presentation on our Twitter and Facebook integration to our executive team, my Facebook status alerts kept popping up in the right corner for all to see, including one from someone in the room. Needless to say, it was a riot and also telling of the potential unintended consequences of Web 2.0 technologies.
Many years ago, I worked for a company that was one of the first to begin regularly monitoring e-mails for content. An unsuspecting co-worker was let go for venting to me about her work situation, and being the recipient of the e-mail I was guilty by association and not very comfortable there afterwards. At another company, an employee's instant messages were used as a defense against a wrongful termination suit - he had no idea IMs weren't private.
And so now we are in the world of Web 2.0, and once again the user community has a learning curve about ettiquette, safety, and common sense. Like the technologies that have come before, we will soon learn that Tweets can be used for good or evil.
