Welcome to nGen Collaboration 6.10!
Two weeks ago the Product Management Team held a company-wide meeting (with an accompanying wiki) to solicit ideas from the nGen community for improvements to nGen Collaboration. The excellent response helped us develop a prioritized list of first steps and the Development Team immediately went to work. Below are 9 functionality improvements that address some of your top concerns. We will continue to work on the list and make significant strides in improving the usability of nGen Collaboration.
Major kudos and thanks to the Development Team who burned the Mignight oil to get this release out, and to Mike Roeder for his summary of the changes.
You might also notice that the platform is running much faster.
Favorites
There is now the ability to favorite a conversation, wiki, group or user. Click the icon next to any of these items and it will be added to your favorites list in the sidebar. Only the top 10 are viewable. To view all your favorites, click the All link under favorites, or when visiting My Page/Profile, click the favorites link. From the All page, you can choose to remove a favorite or turn off alerts for that favorite, which are on by default.
An e-mail alert is sent for conversations, wikis, polls, etc., and notifies you any time the there is a change or reply.
Recently Viewed
A top-10 rolling list of conversations, groups, and profiles you have recently viewed. It is cleared out on login and session expiration. It is in the sidebar below Favorites.
Drafts
nGen Collaboration will now save a draft of new conversations/wikis and edits every 30 seconds! This draft is not visible to other users. You can see your existing drafts from My Page, My Drafts tab. This functionality provides ease of mind and allows you to recover your document if something happens while creating a conversation.
Note: This feature is not intended to replace the unpublish documents feature. Please continue to use the Advanced Options tab on the edit page, and de-select the publish check box. This will prevent your conversation from being visible while you work on it.
Landing Page
You are now automatically directed to your My Page screen on login. You can revert back to the dashboard page as your landing page by visiting your preferences page and choosing dashboard for your login. This feature supports future functionality planned for your My Page (paving the way to make this page more configurable and contain more pertinent information about your account/preferences/settings down the road).
Shared Groups
You can now share conversations across interest groups. For example, with two private Interest Groups (Group A and Group B), Group A can allow all their conversations to be seen by Group B by simply selecting the shared option. However, unless group B does the same, group A cannot see group B's content. This prevents a group owner from unauthorized access to another group's content. "What's yours is yours and what's mine is mine, unless I decide to share mine with you."
Additionally, by selecting non-members can start conversations, members of other selected groups can create new conversation/wikis in your private group.
Denying Membership with reason
You can now specify a reason when you deny a users request to join an interest group, and that user will receive a notification.
Tell a Friend with Message
The Tell-A-Friend option now allows you to specify a message as part of the notification.
Hide Membership of Group
You can now hide the members of an Interest Group from the prying eyes of non-members (If you are a member of said group, you’ll still see the other members).
Outstanding Interest Group Invitations
You can get to your outstanding group invitations from My Page. It is at the bottom of the page.
There is much more to come in the near future, such as filtered search, wiki page versioning, integration of the hubs, and improvements to the user interface!

by Mike Roeder on Jul 22, 2008 - 09:15 AM read 34 timesThanks for the update Steve! For those of you using the site during the week, please post to this thread (or elsewhere as you see fit) your thoughts related to the new functionality. We'd love some feedback from the user community, and it would help us to prioritize any fixes/updates for the upcoming release.

by Vaughan Merlyn on Jul 23, 2008 - 06:02 AM read 31 timesI'm pleased with the updates - and the speed with which they have been implemented! The performance improvements are noticable, and and annoying bug has been eliminated (often when I'd post a reply, I'd just get "error on page" and would have to keep trying the post until it took). But again, it is the speed of change that I'm most impressed by - if the team can keep that momentum, all the requested functionality will be in place within a couple of weeks!

That might already be there, but it's not readily apparent to me other than maybe looking at the TAGs and that is not always a good way.

by Mike Roeder on Jul 25, 2008 - 09:46 AM read 17 timesThanks Cyd! The apps team always appreciates kudos - these guys have been working hard.
As for your question, you're right - currently, the best way to decipher your location is to look at the tags. You can tell if a conversation is part of a group as the tag will have the 'group' icon on the parent conversation, as opposed to a regular tag which will just display the name of the tag. The 'lock' icon indicates that the conversation is secured somehow, either within a private interest group, or some other 'secure' tag (such as nGeneraLock).
However, as you point out, this is less than ideal. We've logged a bug in our tracking system to address this specifically with conversations that are part of a group. If you have any thoughts on how to better visually signify the link between a conversation and an Interest Group to which it is linked, we'd love to hear it.

by Steve P. on Jul 23, 2008 - 01:29 PM read 27 timesThe team has really raised the bar with this release. Best of all, your time to market is truly impressive. Even for me personally, these features will make an enormous difference in my ability to use the hub. The ability to save drafts, coupled with the performance improvements, mean the many items that I often begin to reply to or author in a few minutes prior to a flight departure or similar won't just get lost in a failed session.
All these features are HUGE improvements. As with Google, we always want to remember that it's the "features" not the "product" that's important.
nGen Collaboration is key to our success - and I'm feeling even more confident!

by Tim Bevins on Jul 23, 2008 - 06:01 PM read 35 timesFavorites, Recently Viewed, My Page (especially!), Tell A Friend with a Message are excellent improvements and make the site much more useful and user friendly.
I am a bit perplexed, however, about why so many people (apparently) were so interested in hiding membership in a group ("prying eyes" seems rather a harsh term, as if others wanting to see what a group was doing were intent on subverting the work); being able to provide a reason for denying a membership request; and preventing unauthorized access to another group's content.
I don't think I am so naive as to believe everything in an nGen needs to be open to everybody all the time, but I am suprised there was enough interest in all three to place them high on the list of things people wanted to be able to do. I would have expected improved search, knowledge management, or even single sign-in to be more in demand.

by Mike Roeder on Jul 23, 2008 - 06:24 PM read 46 timesHi Tim - great question. I can't answer towards how many people were actually interested in that bit of functionality (and to be fair, the 'prying eyes' comment in the post by Steve was actually from me.) I've grown fond of transparency, and am trying personally to practice it more myself, and attempt to help others embrace it.
That being said, what I can answer is the 'why' it was done, when to be sure there are bigger pieces of functionality this group is pushing towards. It's pretty innocuous, really. We've recently had 2 new-hires to the Apps Team Collaboration Group development team, and I was prioritizing for this release, I found a couple of items on our 'running list' that had some merit in terms of getting these guys' feet wet. The 'hide membership' option was one of them. So that being said, I wouldn't read much into that particular piece of functionality being included in this release.
As to your other point "I would have expected improved search, knowledge management, or even single sign-in to be more in demand." - Agreed. Search is the BIG piece coming in 7.0 (along with hopefully some other 'huzzah' pieces). It's coming - and soon.
A quick aside - we have SSO. There's improvements to be made for sure, especially as you navigate from hub to hub you should be recognized as a logged in user from the other hub. That is currently being prioritized. If you have some thoughts on the subject, please, create a conversation in the Apps Team Interest Group, or reply here.
Thanks
Mike Roeder

by Steve P. on Jul 23, 2008 - 06:26 PM read 28 timesWe have nGen Collaboration customers who want and need this feature. We will always have features that may or may not be as relevant to nGenera for internal use, but may be popular or desired by our customers. No doubt there are other features that will be added that will be in more demand, and Steve E. and the team are open to input on those, although they already have a great, prioritized feature list under development (Steve E. - maybe you can share that).

Thanks, Steve!
The roadmap has formed in a few different places, so I aggregated the information into one dashboard. This might be a good one to favorite, as an e-mail will be sent any time it is updated. This dashboard represents what has made it into the pipeline, not the entire wish list, and (soon) will have wiki pages associated with each feature to provide greater detail and facilitate feedback.
Our overall goal is to have a substantial number of feature enhancements every 2-3 weeks and whittle down the list of user pain points identified at the nGen Collaboration Company-wide Meeting. This iterative effort will run in parallel with a higher level redesign of the user interface and feature set improvements. Rapid, iterative functionality improvement will drive up participation and foster more design input and use cases from the nGenera community.
Additionally, our QA process (under Maarten Metz) will begin at the time we scope each feature enhancement, and increased collaboration with marketing and sales will help with their efforts. As much as possible, we will try to theme each release to focus on a set of related features. This will help speed the development and QA cycles and have more impact for users. The scheduling criteria considers feature dependencies and inter-dependencies, and ensures we do not paint ourselves into a corner.
Thanks again to the development team for their excellent work!

by Brittain on Jul 24, 2008 - 10:39 AM read 24 timesI wish we weren't being pushed in this "closed" direction, but that's the reality we face with early customers, as SteveP points out.
On the other hand, IMO this is a transitional period. A time when enterprises understand and incorporate transparency into their operations. If and when we clear this phase, our collaborative products - which have always embraced internal and external openness - should be well positioned to serve those enterprises.

by Steve P. on Jul 25, 2008 - 08:54 AM read 18 timesI think the early resistance to transparency is similar to early resistance to trusting the web for conducting e-commerce transactions. These fall away over time, and providing some features which those customers may not even use much makes them feel more comfortable and helps internal champions slay the naysayers.

But I had to copy the link to another post and all I want to do was just blast it out to people.
This might be all related to your enhancement already.
