Example of NGE Behavior

While taking an online course I realized I was witnessing what I understand to be NGE behavior.  I believe this is a good example of a company collaborating with their customers to produce a mutually beneficial outcome.

Wolfram Research is the company that produces Mathematica, which is one of the tools we use for business simulation work.  With the release of their latest version, they started what they call their Demonstrations project.

The Demonstrations project is a site where users of Mathematica can upload examples of their work, categorized by subject.  This project is also well supported throughout the company.  They encouraged their own employees to seed the site with their own examples.  The product group created a template to make it easy to produce these demonstrations and included it in the product.  They also created a freely available "player", allowing anyone to view the demonstrations in real-time.  The training group created a class (the one I attended) for teaching how to create these demonstrations, and provide it for free.  Their QA group reviews the submissions and works with authors to correct any problems before publishing them to the public.  They are proud to announce now that more than half the examples on the site are from non-employees.

The author of the demonstrations is given a static URL referencing the demonstration, and they are encouraged to include it in their research papers and they are given credit for the demonstrations.  Others can improve the demonstrations and their names are added to the contributors list.  The company reserves the right to present the demonstration online and at trade shows.  The source code of the examples is provided for users of the product to learn various techniques.  Potential customers get to see thousands of examples of what the product can do.

It seems their investment has paid off.  There are also a number of other initiatives this company has started.  Mathworld is an excellent resource for information on just about every topic in math, and there is also WolframScience, which is used to support "A New Kind of Science".

Even if you find math boring, the Demonstrations site has all sorts of neat graphics and is a good example of functional web design.
