A relevant article on July 15th from Darryl K. Taft of eWeek on "the growing trend of merging Web 2.0 technologies with SOA (service-oriented architecture) to address issues normally handled through PC-based software, resulting in faster, cheaper and more flexible solutions."
Too much of the article is quotes from various players taking a "we do too" attitude about SOA, but they do reinforce the point that the Next Generation Enterprise will be assembling their applications using a variety of applications, standards, and technologies.
Ultimately though my favorite excerpt drives home the point of all this (emphasis mine):
"We're transforming from an application-centric enterprise to Web 2.0, which is putting the user in charge," said Crupi in Chevy Chase, Md. "Users can create, consume, customize, collaborate. They can access all information anywhere, anytime on any browser."
Web 2.0 tells us, "throw out your application silos and give user's experiences they can understand and control". Next Generation Enterprise's will follow this lead.
