Kalivo Listeners provide visibility into conversations across the web by searching numerous channels and returning relevant results in the form of one or more webhits.  These webhits may be responded to, added to a Kalivo Hub, or otherwise processed.  This Primer discusses the features that support these operations.

Fundamentals

There are a few fundamental tasks when managing webhits, all are executed by selecting an action from the Action list and clicking Go as shown below:

  • Making the interesting webhit content available to your hub participants. This is done by selecting "Add to Hub" and, since it is the most important operation, we discuss it in depth here.
  • Changing the webhit's status.  "Archive", "Mark for Followup", and "Mark Unread" are examples.  The different statuses help organize webhits and are shown below and discussed in depth here.

  • Ignoring.  Ignoring instructs Kalivo Listeners and Feed readers to disregard either specific web page matches or any page from a domain (e.g. all of http://www.microsoft.com/ or http://www.kalivo.com/).
    • Note: choosing to "Ignore Domain and Discard" discards only those webhits checked prior to executing the action.  In other words, at this time, choosing to ignore and discard DOES NOT locate all webhits matching that domain in order to discard them.
  • Deleting.  Deleting discards a webhit.  However, note that in many cases Kalivo may attempt to recreate that webhit if it subsequently encounters the same page when searching.  In the event pages reappear, you probably should "Ignore" those webhits.

Working with Sources

Often it's simpler to manage the webhits from a specific feed or listener source.  To do so click on the Click to pick link, which will open a list of all the current sources, as shown below.  Click on the name of the source (e.g. "IECA & GARP Listener") to work with that source only.

After clicking on a source, Kalivo will refresh the webhits list with only those from the chosen source.  By default, only webhits with a status of "New", "Unread", or "Followup" will display initially.

Working with only one source also adds new actions, as shown below.  Although, these actions can be carried out without checking the box next to individual webhits the actions work the same as those described above; however, the action will apply only to those webhits from the source which have either "New" or "Unread" status.

Therefore:

  • Choosing "Archive All" will set all the "New" or "Unread" webhits to a status of "Archive".
  • Choosing "Delete All" discards all the "New" or "Unread" webhits.
  • Choosing "Ignore All" deletes all the "New" or "Unread" webhits AND adds their URLs to the ignore list so they'll never reappear.

Working with the Webhits List

The webhits list, shown below, offers a number of features:

  • Checkboxes.  Execute any action against multiple webhits simultaneously by checking the boxes to the right of one or more webhits.
  • Sort by column.  Clicking a column heading will sort the list using that column.  Clicking again will reverse the order of sort.
    • Clicking the X column above the checkboxes reversibly checks or unchecks all the visible webhits.
  • Webhit preview or view. Hovering over the magnifying glass icon displays a preview of the webhit content.  Hovering over the webhit title displays the web address (URL) for the original content; click the webhit title to visit the original page.
  • Webhit score.  The colored bar at left displays the score attributed to how well each webhit satisfied the Listener or Feed criteria.  Scores fall in the integer range 1-100.
