The cover story for February's Waters magazine discusses Vanguard's adoption of Web2.0.  The article, which can be found at   http://www.watersonline.com/public/showPage.html?page=702962, interviews Carol Dow (Vanguard CTO) and gives her take on Web2.0 at Vanguard and some thoughts for the financial industry.

Interesting notes:

Carol's view of Web2.0 for Vanguard's extended community is limited to "consumerization-where the consumers are driving the way they want to be serviced."  The technology is still exclusively meant as a push technology with content driven from within Vanguard.  She attributes the lack of blogging and greater community integration to the industry's regulatory environment.

"The financial services industry is not jumping into blogs as much as some others. We want to create a community atmosphere but at the same time there are regulations we have to follow, and we want to make sure that when we put information out there it is clear in terms of what is truly advice vs. just comments, so we have to be careful with that. We are definitely looking to provide more community within that field, but we also have to do it within some of the guidelines that we as an institution need to follow."

Somewhat encouragingly, she adds that internal collaboration is increasing through Web2.0 tools -- "We have more flexibility within our organization to share things through blogs. For example in IT, developers can help each other and get in contact and share their information. It's much easier to introduce internally than externally."
