Since we've not GA with this release, we've "neutered" the e-mail addresses. Which basically means, we run a filter on all personal data to prevent sending someone unwanted e-mails during testing. If you'd like to login, use xcberry@bsgalliance.com and your normal password.
As to your other question, the Sample App is usually used by engineers wanting to learn the platform by working through example code and doc. Additionally, it's a comprehensive, automated functional test suite for the platform.
For non-engineers, the Sample App documents the evolution of the BSG Platform and links to all the detailed APIs and usage information with the intention of answering the question "what can I accomplish with the platform on my project?"
