I’m not an HR practitioner so I don’t have an in-depth knowledge of the area. That said, this feels like the never-ending “social media ROI” discussions to me.
Some activities are clearly good for your organizational health but aren’t going to produce directly measurable benefits. It’s good to *try* to quantify any benefits you can, but I hope no one’s trying to eliminate HR altogether just because they can’t easily show a profit coming out of it on their flowchart.
Giving me free coffee doesn’t directly add value to my company, but it certainly helps keep the workforce engaged and more comfortable with our environment. I think social networking on the job is similar, as are top-notch HR practices.
